Amy Johnston

Amy graduated with a degree in English Language and Literature and, initially, she worked in advertising and promotions for a large media company. Although this work was interesting and she gained useful experience, she couldn’t imagine a life-long career in the field.

Coming from a family of teachers, Amy spent some time supporting in a primary classroom and realised that she loved working with young people. She decided to train as a teacher and completed a Primary PGCE. She went on to teach across the primary age range, from Early Years to Y6, where she realised that her passion was for working with children outdoors, in nature, whenever possible. She has worked as a science coordinator and a geography coordinator and helped schools achieve funding and awards in these subjects.

After 12 years in the classroom, Amy left mainstream education to work on a children’s democratic learning community project, set in woodland.  She also began working on a freelance basis for a number of charity groups who have science education at their heart. Amy is thrilled to have joined YPTE as Education Officer where she can bring her passion for teaching and the environment to the role.  She believes that young people who are supported to care about the natural environment will be the problem solvers that we need to help protect it in the future.
