Joe Biden, the newly-inaugurated 46th President of the United States yesterday signed an executive order for the US to rejoin the Paris climate agreement. The action comes after former President Donald Trump withdrew America from the Paris agreement last year.

President Biden is also set to end oil drilling at two huge national monuments in Utah, Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears End and drilling in the Artic national wildlife wilderness.  The Keystone XL pipeline, a highly controversial project to transport oil from Canada to the USA to be refined will also be halted.

This comes within hours of the new administration being sworn in and is a marked contrast with former President Trump’s, which erased all references to climate from the White House website in 2017.  The climate crisis is now shown as second only to the coronavirus pandemic in terms of urgent priorities on the site.

These striking new developments should give us all hope that the world may be able to get on track with reducing our carbon emissions in time to meet the goals of the Paris agreement.
