Team - Lorna Mein

Growing up on the south coast and always having outdoor hobbies and pursuits meant Lorna never questioned her love for nature and the environment. Being an enthusiast for all things outdoors, Lorna considers herself lucky to have travelled and enjoyed so many different environments, wildlife and cultures – and benefitted from the physical and mental health benefits this brings.

Now trying to bring up kids of her own that respect and enjoy the environment with the same passion as herself, Lorna feels it’s important to build a joy for the outdoors in children, which will then grow into a respect and desire to look after it. Children have a natural interest in their environment and the creatures and forces they share it with, and Lorna wants to ensure we nurture this to build a community of young people who can boldly problem solve solutions without feeling overwhelmed by the immensity of the tasks.

Lorna started a career in publishing straight out of completing her undergrad degree at Brighton University – a temporary three month position that turned into a 22 year (and counting) career at Wiley. Working initially in book publishing, Lorna managed the marketing for brands including …For DummiesSybex and Architectural Design, and worked with authors on book projects from coffee table design books to Raspbery Pi guides to get kids interested in technology. Working more recently in open access scholarly research publishing has given Lorna an insight into the importance of integrity, trust and transparency in science communication, and given her a renewed enthusiasm to find ways to engage young people with honest information about the environment and their impact on it. Whilst anyone can be a content creator now,  being a content provider that young people and teachers can trust is a purpose Lorna is excited to support.
